Welcome — Following the 20th Anniversary of the Autumn of Nations, Fall 2009

Susan PearceGreetings to everyone. This is a blog of Susan C. Pearce, Assistant Professor of Sociology, East Carolina University, Greenville, NC, USA.

On November 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall fell, to the exhuberant delight of millions (billions?). Across the countries of the former Eastern Bloc countries, this year marked the beginning of a transformation from dictatorship to….. Please follow me as I travel across East-Central Europe to document how each country is collectively remembering the events of 1989 and trying to understand the meanings of this anniversary for all the citizens of the region.

    Do you think my riding a rocking, pitching, American destroyer up and down the Atlantic in 1955 was in any way related to what happpened in 1989?
